A motorcyclist was killed in a tragic one-vehicle road traffic collision near Newry yesterday morning (Sunday 23rd September).  It is understood the rider, a man in his 50s, sustained fatal injuries after hitting the wall of a residential driveway along the Fathom Line around 11.30am.

An emergency crew was immediately sent to the scene, with NI Ambulance Service confirming that a further two emergency crews were tasked to the incident to treat a number of people for shock.

Newry SDLP councillor Gary Stokes said the motorcyclist’s death was “an absolute tragedy.”

“It’s terrible. Someone out for a spin on their motorbike and this happens. His family will be absolutely devastated,” he said.

Expressing his sympathy to the family and friends of the stricken motorcyclist, Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady said news of another fatality on local roads has “deeply saddened the local community.”

It is the second tragedy to hit the area in just a few days following the tragic death of a young man who was killed by a falling tree while working at Slieve Gullion Forest Park on Wednesday.

Police have appealed to anyone who was travelling on the Fathom Line around the time of the collision on Sunday and who may have witnessed the collision, or has dashcam footage which could assist with their enquiries to contact them at the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference number 621 23/09/18.
