The funeral is taking place today (Monday) of the Mullaghbawn pensioner who died in a tragic accident on his farm on Wednesday last.

Matt McCoy, who was aged in his seventies, was killed while tending a cow that was calving. A well-known and popular farmer, the tragedy has devastated the local community, parish priest Fr. John Heagney said.

The tragedy unfolded when police responded to a report of a sudden death at Mr McCoy’s Newry Road farm shortly after 2pm on Wednesday. They were quickly followed by the Ambulance Service, which included one rapid response vehicle paramedic and one emergency ambulance crew. The air ambulance was also tasked to the scene, but was stood down whilst on its way to the accident.

Fr Heagney said the entire community has been left devastated.

“The family are incredibly shocked and saddened, he was a good family man and neighbour,” he said.  The whole neighbourhood is shocked.  Matt was very well-known as a farmer in the community here and very well liked. His wife is incredibly sad.”

Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Larkin said the tragedy has affected the entire community and he extended his sympathy to Mr McCoy’s bereaved family.

Requiem mass took place in Mullaghbawn earlier today (Monday).  Matt is survived by his wife Delia, daughter Adele, son-in law Christopher, grandchildren Shannon, Aoibheann, Phelim and Erin-Grace and his wider family circle.

The Health and Safety Executive said it is investigating the incident.
