A sixteen year old shop assistant has been left extremely shaken after being confronted by a knife wielding thug who ordered him to hand over cash from a Newry convenience store on Saturday evening.
The young staff member was alone in the Today’s Local shop in Whitegates complex in The Meadow area of Newry around 6.30pm on Saturday when a man entered the store armed with a knife and demanding cash.
Speaking to The Examiner about his ordeal, the brave teenager’s mum told us her son was confronted by the man who shouted, “Money now!”, whilst brandishing a knife at the young cashier. The terrified teenager opened both tills for the culprit and he made off with a sum of cash, leaving the staff member in a state of shock at the incident.
Thanking everyone who sent well wishes to her son after his frightening ordeal, the Newry mum said she was extremely proud of him and commended him for “handling the situation brilliantly.”
CCTV images of the suspect have been shared widely on social media over the weekend. The man is described as a white male around 6’1 of slim build. He was wearing a dark coloured hat with a scarf around his face and was wearing red gloves, a black jacket with a hood and white cord, blue denim jeans and white trainers.
