Concerns over treacherous potholes on Concession Road

The Examiner received a number of reports from motorists during last week’s bout of wintry conditions regarding the state of disrepair of the Concession Road from Culloville to Ballinacarry Bridge.

As our photos show, the road surface is dangerously uneven due to several large potholes running along the side of the busy main road.

Drivers concerned about the dangers they present say they are being forced to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid the substantial potholes.

Having highlighted the concerns to the Department of Infrastructure, a spokesperson  said a number of potholes had been repaired on Concession Road last week. Admitted they were dealing with a “challenging budgetary situation” the Department spokesperson said that public safety remains a “key priority”.

“The winter weather does undoubtedly accelerate the deterioration of roads. Water ingress and freeze thaw action after heavy rainfall and cold snaps leads to the formation of more potholes,” explained the spokesperson.

“Public safety remains a key priority for the Department and despite a challenging budgetary situation, the Department has this year delivered a significant programme of resurfacing and surface dressing and continues to carry out a programme of routine maintenance, including pothole repairs and street lighting repairs, to meet all essential public safety requirements.

“Indeed a number of potholes were repaired on Concession Road this week.

“As always, and in particular during this period of bad weather, we would encourage road users to be mindful of road conditions and adjust the way we drive, ride or cycle to ensure it is appropriate for the conditions.”
