The wider Bessbrook and Newry area mourned the passing of one of its best-known and respected charity workers with the passing of Denis Mulgrew on Tuesday last.

A champion of voluntary charity work, particularly for ill and disabled children, Denis was best known for his association with the Friends of Children charity, of which he was a founding member.  His tireless efforts ensured the annual Friends of Children Charity Ball took place every year where children from across the district who suffer from life-limiting disabilities are the guests of honour at the glittering ceremony.

Denis’ colleagues in the charity expressed sorrow at his loss with an announcement of his passing on the charity’s Facebook page, which read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mr Denis Mulgrew. Denis was the founder member of Friends of Children over 18 years ago.  We pass on our condolences to his wife and son and extended family.  Rest in peace Denis, we will miss you.”

Denis is survived by his wife Marilou, son Joseph, brother Jim, sister Joyce and extended family circle.  He was laid to rest in St Malachy’s Cemetery, Carrickcruppen following requiem Mass in St Peter and Paul’s Church, Bessbrook on Thursday.

In lieu of floral tributes, donations can be made to the Renal Unit, Daisy Hill Hospital c/o Daniel Mallon Funeral Director, The Gatehouse, Mill Rd, Bessbrook.
