As he returned to Stormont this week, SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty has extended his appreciation to all those who came out and supported him in the recent Assembly Election.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to those who came out and supported the SDLP in last week’s Assembly Election, both those who gave me their first preference vote and those who transferred to the SDLP. At the end up I had over 10,000 votes and I am truly grateful for the support from right across this constituency,” he said.

“The electorate have spoken and now it is up to all ninety Assembly Members to get back to work. Whilst a major part of this election was about the RHI scandal, incompetence and alleged corruption at the heart of the Executive, people raised concerns about problems in our health service, poor broadband provision in rural areas and the state of many of our roads. The people have elected a team of representatives to get back to Stormont and have given us a job of work to do.”

Congratulating his Newry and Armagh constituency Assembly colleagues, Mr McNulty said: “We all recognized that with the reduction from six to five seats and all six sitting Assembly Members seeking re-election, there was always going to be one MLA not returning to Stormont.  Unfortunately for Danny Kennedy, he was the one who fell short on the day.  Danny has been an outstanding public representative for Newry and Armagh for many years, initially at Council and then in the Assembly. I always found him to be a very honourable man and a great constituency colleague. Whatever life has planned for Danny, I wish him, his wife and family every good success and blessing in the years ahead,” he added.
